Boot-US work

Boot-US is a Boot Manager developed by Ulrich Straub.
It complies with existing standards but also supports all modern operating systems, including Windows Operating Systems and Linux distributions. It can be installed & configured under Windows.
A nice feature is you can manage (created, delete, modify) partitions and format them.
For more information about Boot-US, visit their website at http://www.boot-us.com/.

Vienna Computer Products has developed a module for removable-media boot (to boot CDs and DVDs) Straub used as template for implementing boot CD/DVD support into his Boot Manager.
Part of the job was also writing a documentation of the removable-media boot mechanism.

The "removable-media boot" module was completely written in Assembly language. It doesn't use BIOS functions to boot the removable media.
It operates in the Real Mode and is highly portable (it uses non fixed addresse etc.).
The module itself has two functions, one to find all CD/DVD drives, and one for booting a specific CD/DVD.

It complies with all standards they are in connection with removable media boot:

  • El Torito Bootable CD-ROM Format Specification
  • BIOS Boot Specification
  • BIOS Enhanced Disk Drive Services
  • ATAPI Removable Media BIOS Specification

Some of these standards are mentioned on the WHDC subsites.
Phoenix Technologies (especially their Technical Editor Curtis E. Stevens) has developed (in case with other vendors) all these boot standards, which are used and supported on all Personal Computers in the late nineties as long as today.
Vienna Computers wrote a documentation about the boot CD/DVD mechanism which includes and minds all these standards, you can request it via the Vienna Computer Products Press.
