EIPTN
E-Mail 2 IP Tracker & Notifier (EIPTN) is a small product I have developed in some operations with law enforcements. The trick is a very old one, to track people through e-mails. Depending on the use email service the sender's IP (and the one of all routing servers) will be added to the internet headers. However, there are some online mail services like Gmail that do not store the IP address there. A very old and cheap (but effective) trick is to store a picture into an html email, and link the picture to a server. When the user opens the email, then the email client downloads the picture and builds up a connection. This trick was long used by spam sender to see if the mail is being opened, and as a result Outlook and online services block pictures in html mails by default.
Most people sending extortion mails use online services like Yahoo or Gmail - because they can access it from anywhere, and preferable not from their home computer. For me this is good, because such online services display the pictures from trusted contacts. Someone becomes in Yahoo for example trusted when sending and receiving a mail.
