Peter Kleissner

I (Peter Kleissner) am the person hosting this site and making all this possible. I got my own startup "Insecurity Systems".

I live in a house in Wr. Neudorf, a suburb of Vienna (Austria). I'm 20 years old and love open source ;).

A personal website (showing my other websites) is available under www.kleissner.net and a blog at peterkleissner.com. If you have any open questions about me feel free to contact me under Peter@Kleissner.at. I am tweeting on http://twitter.com/Kleissner.

Here are some information about my qualification and experience:

  2003 Application development started
2005 Operating system development & Research work started, development of ToasterOS started
2006 further development of ToasterOS, work on some other projects and written 2 books and over 50 papers about System development
2007 custom work, Boot-US: Writing a documentation and source code for boot CD/DVD support
TeraByte Unlimited: Writing an ASCII to ANSI (and reverse) Converter
EPIGUS Institute: Writing a database clean-up program for Statistik Austria databases
  2008 Ikarus Security Software
  2009 Ikarus Security Software
            Insecurity Systems
  2010 Insecurity Systems

Conferences I have spoken on:
2009 Black Hat USA: Stoned Bootkit
2009 Hacking at Random: The Rise of MBR Rootkits & Bootkits in the Wild
2009 DeepSec IDSC 2009 Europe: Stoned déjà vu - again

My daily used programming languages I know perfectly:
  - Delphi (Pascal, Object Pascal/Delphi)
  - C++ in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
  - Assembler (low-level x86)

I know other languages well (C, C#, scripting languages, ...) but don't use them daily.

Previous services I have done for companies:
  - Boot-US: Writing a documentation and source code for boot CD/DVD support
  - TeraByte Unlimited: Writing an ASCII to ANSI (and reverse) Converter
  - EPIGUS Institute: Writing a database clean-up program for Statistik Austria databases

I have written some computer science related articles which can be found on my websites. For my operating system development work have a look at ToasterOS and other system development work of me.

I like reverse engineering, Windows internals, OS security research and operating system development. I love to write stuff in assembly language - it gives me the full control over the system. New! See my events schedule: http://web17.webbpro.de/index.php?page=events. Some places to meet me:

Black Hat USA 2009 Briefings - meet me in Vegas!
Hacking at Random 2009 - Netherlands

If you want to know something about me continue looking at this site, it's the only one that I am changing regularly every few days (cause I've many others...).

So let's say something about me. In private I like lyrics, music and of course (developer) computer stuff (I'm not a freak eh). In my freetime (when I have one) I love to write computer related articles (under the Articles section). I'm fine with Windows Vista and use it since it was out. I was a user of Windows ME :S but this does not belong to here.

I am now user of Twitter, follow me up at http://twitter.com/Kleissner. Since my last notebook was stolen (out of AV office) I'm bit more out for security, my notebook is now full volume encrypted with a 50 character long password ;). But I will show on Black Hat USA 2009 that this is not secure enough, it is still vulnerable to my Stoned Bootkit.

For private emails sent to me I now accept pgp encrypted messages, you can download my Public PGP Key.

Curious (and fun stuff):

   Good Bad

Conclusion: uhm.. don't know yet! Does not look good for me!
  • I am now releasing my Anti-Windows Stoned Bootkit, together with AntiWPA, it was the same software that I proposed Microsoft in 2007 (and they rejected it)
  • Earlier this year Microsoft looked at my sites for the source code of the Hibernation File Attack, why not dropping me a mail? -> I blocked them out of my site.. IP range 131.107.0.0/24
  • Half of the personal information I am revealing here is wrong. Is this? ;)
  • I have a cousin working in Silicon Valley
  • Sometimes I don't know whom I'm working for ;)Now, (after Black Hat), I know it
  • I got a tattoo on my left underarm, check it out at Black Hat
  • "DNS Kaminsky"

Black Hat Week - Daily Blog:

Day 1 (Sunday, 26 July 2009)

Video blog entry: http://www.vimeo.com/5772917

Day 2 (Monday, 27 July 2009)

Still in Zurich. Today I should have flight to Philadelphia and Las Vegas, however, due to technical problems the (delayed) flight was cancelled. This means finally about 4 hours at airport, 3 hours in the plane and then 1 hour at airport and then confirmation that the flight was moved to tomorrow. In the mean time I got a 5-star hotel room in the Radisson where I will rest the night. Hum! I will arrive Tuesday evening and have Wednesday morning as first speaker my presentation! Hopefully there will be enough time for my beauty sleep, that's all what I have to care about the moment ;). And locally here in Zurich (cool city!) there is currently coming up an "Ungewitter".

Day 3 (Tuesday, 28 July 2009)

Flight was going at 10 AM, I needed to wait 3 hours at the check-in (they had to rebook all connecting flights for 300 people). 8 hours later I arrived in Philadelphia, however the security officer from homeland security did not believe me I was going to Black Hat - so I had to go to secondary inspection. There arrived, I had to convince them and showing all my papers I had about the conference. This needed about 1 hour, so I missed my connecting flight. So I had to re-rebook the flight and finally got one to Las Vegas. Arriving at 11 pm in the hotel (Caesars Palace) I had then just 10 hours to my talk - and I was awake for 28 hours (because of the travelling). The last thing I had do organize on that day was an European to US plug converter which I finally got half past midnight.

Day 4 - Day of speech!

It was awesome. So many people, so many great responses. I really enjoyed talking at Caesars about the Stoned Bootkit. Stoned!

Days 5 - 9 are missing

Day 10 (Tuesday, 4th August 2009) - I lost my AV job

Today I lost my AV job due to general misunderstandings by the media and complaints from non-technical people. Time for getting my startup done!

So what is next? I don't know!
